Who We Are 
Started in 1983, For Good Measure is Victoria's original Bulk Food Store, now in its second generation of family ownership. We specialize in bulk, natural and specialty foods and our customers buy everything here from fresh produce grown on our family farm and eggs grown in Cobble Hill to dried fruit, BC grown grains and flour, spices, raw nuts and even fresh roasted nuts from our in-store kitchen. We pride ourselves on our customer service. Our small stores and small teams allow our staff to get to know the products and the customers on a personal level.

Our James Bay store is our second location. We opened in June 2020 after taking over the existing grocery store which had operated since 1910. While the store has changed hands many times and names a few times, it has remained a staple of the community for over 100 years. Our James Bay store has its own in-house café and patio. From live music performed by musicians that live in James Bay to staff that live in the neighbourhood and walk to work we strive to maintain the store as a community hub. We focus on local produce and products and above all else quality. Our patio that we call ’The Hideaway’ is a sunny outdoor space that frequently has live music, pop up food carts and other events.

Not only does our James Bay location list over a hundred bulk items, roast its own nuts in-house but also specializes in local produce and grocery products including Halburton Farm, Sunwing, Dumpling Drop, Four Quarters Meats, Galloping Goose Sausage Company, Wildfire bread, Mosi Bakery, Island Farms Milk, Tree Island Yogurt and many others.

Summary or Position 
The Store Manager reports directly to the owner and is responsible for the day to day operations of the store. The successful candidate will work with our small team of 5-10 to ensure we are meeting our stores objectives while delivering the exceptional customer experience we are known for. They will take an interest in the community and work hard to get to know the customers. We are looking for someone who is organized and who can work within and lead a small team.

This role is for our James Bay location at 579 Niagara St. Victoria BC, V8V 1H8.

Roles & Responsibilities

Tasks

  • Direct and control daily operations
  • Evaluate daily operations
  • Plan and organize daily operations
  • Manage staff and assign duties
  • Determine merchandise and services to be sold
  • Implement price and credits policies
  • Locate, select and procure merchandise for resale
  • Develop and implement marketing strategies
  • Plan budgets and monitor revenues and expenses
  • Determine staffing requirements
  • Resolve issues that may arise, including customer requests, complaints and supply shortages
  • Recruit, hire and supervise staff and/or volunteers
  • Conduct performance reviews
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical problems
  • Stock shelves and display areas
  • Sell products on a retail basis
  • Maintain adequate stock levels
  • Balance cash and complete balance sheets, cash reports and related forms
  • Order stock
  • Provide customer service

Knowledgeable in coffee, food, and grocery products 
Experience using Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, Adobe Acrobat Reader 
Experience using POS (point of sale) system 
Experience using digital bookkeeping systems 
Ability to work within and lead a small team 
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment 
Ability to work under pressure 
Ability to work with combinations of extended periods of sitting, standing, and/or walking
